Hello Friends and Colleagues!

Can you believe it’s already almost the end of January? It hardly seems possible. This month has simply flown by and I just realized I hadn’t yet blogged in the New Year! So here’s to 2006!

I want to share a wonderful experience I have had this month. I hope it will inspire you to stretch and try new social muscles.

As many of you may know, I have a very broad outreach in the work that I do. I work with clients/colleagues all over the globe. However one piece that has been lacking (or minimal) for me since the onset of my private Coaching, Speaking, Consulting and Training business is my regular contact with local people/business (outside of the contacts I have in State Government, my committee work and friends/family).

So I made a decision to change that in 2006.

My first step was to attend a Greeters meeting with our Salem OR Chamber of Commerce. I had no contacts whatsoever in this group and was a bit apprehensive about just “showing up.” I’m used to knowing lots of people at meetings/conventions I attend and I am used to being in a leadership or, training or speaking role when I do attend. So just “showing up” at a local meeting definitely qualifies as a stretch for me. However, I ask my clients to stretch regularly (I don’t ask them to do anything I won’t do) and I deeply know the value of pushing our comfort zone, so I went for it.

It was amazing!

I met so many creative, ambitious and well—FUN, business people there! I sat next to a really nice gentleman who I learned quickly is a long-standing ambassador for the Chamber. I also learned quickly that he has tried to retire but can’t help himself—he just can’t seem to manage it. He’s says he’ll be trying it again soon, but I have my doubts (even after our brief encounter) that it will stick. :-)
He took me under his wing and made sure I met as many people as humanly possible. Thank you Dean!!!

Outcome: I’m joining!!!

I’m making it a point to attend as many of the Greeters meetings and other Chamber events as I can within the scope of my work schedule.

And I’m delighted to do it too!

A challenge for you…

Think of one social or networking encounter that you’ve been meaning to make a reality, but have always found some reason not to go for it.

Commit to trying it at least one time before the end of Feb.

Tell your coach or a person you consider to be your closest friend about your commitment and ask them to hold you accountable.

Then share the results of your experience with that person and others in your life.

We’d love to hear them here too!

Here’s to stretching and reaping the beautiful benefits!
